It should be eviden t
by now that government policy is set largely by industry. Why are
gas-burning vehicles our only choice when electric cars could have
been produced for decades? Why are we still burning damaging fossil
fuels when fuel-cell technology is over 100 years old?
Why are we slave
to American made cotton clothes when hemp fabrics out last them
three times over? Why are alcohol and tobacco (combined the leading
cause of death and probably, rising insurance rates) still readily
available while a beneficial substance like cannabis is prohibited?
HEMPORIUM can tell you why. When one un-patentable plant can literally replace
the trillions in profits of polluting mega-industries ( gas and
oil, pulp and paper, cotton, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals) the
conspiracy is easy to see.
The agri-food industry
was found guilty of collusion and price fixing yet food prices continue
to rise. The tobacco industry was found guilty of spiking nicotine
levels to increase addictiveness (and sales) and then found guilty
of lying to congress about it, yet you can still buy their products
unhindered.
How can anyone dispute
that governments care more for big industry and their money than
they do for the people who elected them? Prior to the passing of
the controlled substances act (Oct '98) cannabis was listed under
the narcotics control act of the criminal code of Canada. It was
in the same category as cocaine and heroin. Any arrest and charge
by police was treated with the full weight of the justice system
whether it was possession of a joint or a kilo.
Now, if you were
found to possess one ounce of cannabis or one gram of hash or oil
it would be treated as a summary offence. These offences do not
require photos and fingerprints nor do they result in criminal records.
There are currently many constitutional challenges before the courts
concerning several aspects of cannabis; growing / possessing for
medical purposes and growing / possessing for religious or cultural
reasons. Some
brave judges have already ruled favorably for the challengers though
gutless crown appeals are expected.
